Steve Nieve

Paris-based contemporary composer Steve Nieve has been playing keyboards for Elvis Costello for more than thirty years, firstly as a member of The Attractions, and in more recent times with The Imposters. Steve also has worked on Costello’s solo albums and alongside Elvis and Burt Bacharach as part of the Painted From Memory album and tour.

Perhaps the most intimate performances, however, were those where Elvis and Steve toured together creating a spellbinding tour-de-force of piano, guitar and voice. Anybody who has witnessed these or indeed any of Elvis Costello’s live shows will appreciate the special magic that occurs when Steve Nieve is let loose to solo on the piano.

Now, finally, get to experience a full evening of this magic as Steve and his piano take centre stage. “Steve Nieve plays Elvis Costello” and a whole lot more, expect to hear themes from his piano solo records “Keyboard Jungle” “It’s Raining Somewhere” “Lazy Point” – from “Windows” from “Welcome to the Voice” from “Mumu” and from his latest album “Together”. Expect to hear intimate stories of  Steve’s adventures with Elvis. Expect a heart in mouth display of piano virtuosity, incendiary Steinway frenzy, and melodic inventiveness.

“Everyone talks about Elvis’ brilliant lyric writing, but this concert shines a light on his daring and beautiful compositions. I decided to make a series of solo piano recordings, playing in my own fashion the music of other artists I have admired,  It was a natural choice that I would begin with my dearest friend. Actually to Elvis too, he told me to let him know how it goes so that he can see if people actually know the catalog.  (Laughing) Not really, but he has certainly given me his blessing. When I told E.C. I was planning to record, with just my piano,  David Bowie, Erik Satie, Nina Simone, Neil Young, all my musical heroes, his reaction was ’I am proud to be the first of such august assembly’. Probably, because I am so close, for so long to all these songs, that’s the most difficult to achieve and to take my freedom with. Once I get infront of an audience of bold listeners with my piano, be it an upright or a grand, with these enormous songs, the evening seems to go by in a flash”  – Steve Nieve

Elvis Costello says, “After playing 34 years with me it was almost predictable this could happen, however it’s a surprise to discover these tunes revisited by my friend, never too close to the ‘model’ and never so far from the spirit.”

Steve currently records and performs with the Steve Nieve Band, with Francois Poggio on guitar (Etienne Daho and Lou Doillon) and Tall Ulyss on vocals and drums. Projects in the works include “The Idiot Boy”, a chamber orchestral setting of William Wordsworth’s masterpiece, “The Table”, a second Téodori / Nieve opera, and a concerto for  Vox Continental Organ and String Orchestra.

Steve may be best recognized as a member of the Attractions, but his resume is long and deep: gifted piano prodigy, who composes music for film and TV, graced recordings from Jagger to Squeeze and everyone in between, and of course THE integral member of Elvis’ long and storied musical arc.
